REPORT: Stafford is a Lion

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Matthew Stafford has signed a contract with the Detroit Lions to make him the #1 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. The contract details as reported are $41.7m in guarentees, $78m maximum value over six years. Potentially Stafford will go into camp competing for the starting QB job with Daunte Culpepper, Drew Stanton, and Drew Henson.

Detroit still has the 20th overall pick in the first and the 33rd overall pick (second round). Look for Detroit to either add a backside protector for the Stafford investment and/or defensive help, after all the Lions did have statistically the second worse defense all-time.

The Rams are now on the Clock…

Yes. This is a very early look at the top 32 players that will be eligible for the 2010 NFL Draft. NEW: Mock Draft Updated

aaron-curry1The 2009 NFL Mock Draft has been updated with the new trade that had the Philadelphia Eagles acquiring Pro-Bowl left tackle Jason Peters from the Buffalo Bills for the Eagles 2009 1st Rounder (28th overall), 2009 4th Rounder (121st overall), and a late-round pick in 2010.

1. Detroit Lions — Aaron Curry (LB, Wake Forest)

2. St. Louis Rams — Jason Smith (OT, Baylor)

3. Kansas City Chiefs — Eugene Monroe (OT, Virginia)

4. Seattle Seahawks — Mark Sanchez (QB, USC)

5. Cleveland Browns — B.J. Raji (DT/NT, Boston College)

6. Cincinnati Bengals — Andre Smith (OT, Alabama)

7. Oakland Raiders — Jeremy Maclin (WR, Missouri)

8. Jacksonville Jaguars — Michael Crabtree (WR, Texas Tech)

9. Green Bay Packers — Tyson Jackson (DE, LSU)

10. San Francisco 49ers — Brian Orakpo (DE/OLB, Texas)

11. Buffalo Bills — Michael Oher (OT, Ole Miss)

12. Denver Broncos — Malcolm Jenkins (CB/S, Ohio State)

13. Washington Redskins — Matthew Stafford (QB, Georgia)

14. New Orleans Saints — Chris “Beanie” Wells (RB, Ohio State)

15. Houston Texans — Brian Cushing (LB, USC)

16. San Diego Chargers — Clay Mathews (LB, USC)

17. New York Jets — Josh Freeman (QB, Kansas State)

18. Denver Broncos (from Chicago) — Aaron Maybin (DE, Penn State)

19. Tampa bay Buccaneers — Michael Johnson (DE, Georgia Tech)

20. Detroit Lions (from Dallas) — Robert Ayers (DE, Tennessee)

21. Philadelphia Eagles — Brandon Pettigrew (TE, Oklahoma State)

22. Minnesota Vikings — Eben Britton (OT, Arizona)

23. New England Patriots — Rey Maualuga (LB, USC)

24. Atlanta Falcons — Evander Hood (DT, Missouri)

25. Miami Dolphins — Everette Brown (DE/OLB, Florida State)

26. Baltimore Ravens — Darrius Heyward-Bey (WR, Maryland)

27. Indianapolis Colts — Peria Jerry (DT, Ole Miss)

28. Buffalo Bills (from Philadelphia/from Carolina) — Darius Butler (CB, Connecticut)

29. New York Giants — Kenny Britt (WR, Rutgers)

30. Tennessee Titans — Percy Harvin (WR, Florida)

31. Arizona Cardinals — Knowshon Moreno (RB, Georgia)

32. Pittsburgh Steelers — Alex Mack (OC/OG, California)

Analysis: With the Detroit Lions taking Aaron Curry with the first overall selection, it really shuffles up the rest of the draft causing Matthew Stafford to take a fall (not quite a Brady Quinn style fall, but a fall none the less). Another surprise has Mark Sanchez being taken by the Seattle Seahawks preparing for the future, who seems to be a proto-typical west coast quarterback. Perhaps another surprise has the Cheeseheads of Green Bay taking the defensive end from LSU, Tyson Jackson who could either be a DE or a rush linebacker in that new 3-4 defense in GB.

What do you know, Dan Snyder makes a choice that will send shock up and down team draft boards by selecting Matthew Stafford. They have plenty of holes on their team but this kind of move would pretty much render Jason Campbell about as usefull as monopoly money. Another shocker here, the New England Patriots have a stud linebacker fall to them in Rey Maualuga to inject some youth into an aging LB core.

The Last pretty big surprise is the Arizona Cardinals lucking out with Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno falling to them at pick 31. It was obvious that Edge does not have any future left in Zona, and we don’t think that Tim Hightower has a future as a feature, but will make an excellent complementary back.
